Joe Gatto, who gained fame as an original cast member of the popular hidden camera comedy series "Impractical Jokers," has responded to recent accusations made against him on social media.
The 48-year-old comedian addressed the sexual assault allegation that appeared on TikTok Thursday with a brief statement.
"I have used poor judgment and as a result have violated the trust of the people I love most," Gatto acknowledged in his response. He firmly denied the assault allegation, adding: "Anyone who knows me at all knows full well that I wouldn't assault anyone."
Gatto concluded his statement by announcing a retreat from public appearances. "Working on myself is an ongoing process, and I am now going to take some time away from the public eye to focus my energies where I need to."
This isn't the first time Gatto has stepped back from the spotlight. After being part of the comedy troupe that launched "Impractical Jokers" in 2011, he appeared in 244 episodes and the franchise's feature film before his departure in 2021.
At that time, Gatto explained his exit on Instagram with a heartfelt message to fans: "Sorry in advance for the long and more-serious-than-usual note below, I just wanted to let you all know that I will no longer be involved with 'Impractical Jokers.'"
He continued: "Alongside my friends, I've devoted a decade of my life to building this franchise and couldn't be prouder of what has been accomplished. However, due to some issues in my personal life, I have to step away. Bessy and I have decided to amicably part ways, so now I need to focus on being the best father and co-parent to our two incredible kids."
The long-running prank show, which originally featured Gatto alongside fellow comedians James Murray, Brian Quinn, and Sal Vulcano, has continued without him. Now in its eleventh season and airing on TBS, the show has welcomed various guest comedians including Eric André to fill the fourth position in Gatto's absence.
The franchise that Gatto helped build has remained a staple in comedy television despite the changes to its original lineup.
