Monster Hunter Wilds Bombs on Steam as PC Players Flee to a 7-Year-Old Game
ByEpisode Hive
Monster Hunter Wilds is facing a rough patch, especially on PC.
Despite a strong start — with over 10 million copies sold and more than a million concurrent Steam players — the tide has turned sharply.
The game’s Steam rating has plummeted to “Overwhelmingly Negative” due to a wave of review-bombing from frustrated fans.
What Sparked the Backlash?
Players are criticizing the lack of deep endgame content compared to past entries in the series.
Many feel the game’s famous difficulty has been watered down with mechanics that oversimplify the challenge.
The story campaign also hasn’t impressed, with fans calling it short and forgettable.
But the biggest issue, by far, is performance on PC.
Even players with top-tier hardware are experiencing stuttering, poor frame rates, and constant crashes.
Verified Steam reviews mention bugs, graphical glitches, and gameplay issues that remain unfixed months after launch.
A Shrinking Player Base
As performance problems persist, many players are leaving Wilds behind.
Monster Hunter: World — a seven-year-old game — now has more than twice the concurrent players of Wilds.
Fans are returning to World for its polished gameplay, deeper content, and better performance.
This comparison has only made Wilds’ shortcomings more glaring.
Where’s the Long-Term Engagement?
Monster Hunter games are known for their longevity, with tough monsters and rewarding endgames keeping fans engaged.
But Wilds seems to lack that staying power.
Grinding gear feels unnecessary when fights are too easy to require real strategy.
This has left players little reason to stick around after finishing the main content.
Can Capcom Turn Things Around?
Some are holding out hope for upcoming Title Updates — like the one featuring Lagiacrus set for late June 2025.
If these updates bring meaningful content and fix PC issues, there may still be a path to redemption.
Other Monster Hunter games, like World and Rise, also had rocky starts and bounced back after key updates.
But the problems in Wilds feel more severe — especially for PC players — and fixes have been slow to arrive.
Some longtime fans may have already moved on for good.
Monster Hunter Wilds is currently available on Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5, and PC via Steam.
