Netflix's Yellowstone Rival Just Got Canceled - Here’s Why
ByEpisode Hive
A Shocking End for Netflix’s Australian Western
Imagine investing in a show that reaches Netflix’s Top 10 in 74 countries and still gets canceled. That’s exactly what happened to Territory, Netflix’s ambitious neo-Western drama.
Despite its global success, fans won’t be getting a second season. But why?
Netflix Pulls the Plug on Territory
Netflix has officially confirmed that Territory will not return for Season 2.
The show, which debuted in October 2024, was meant to be Australia’s answer to Yellowstone. It even ended on a cliffhanger, making a second season seem inevitable.
But according to C21 Media, the cast and crew were informed weeks ago that the series was getting the axe. Now, Netflix has made it official.
A Strong Start That Wasn’t Enough
Despite high hopes, Territory will be a one-season wonder.
- Ranked No. 2 on Netflix’s Global Top 10 English-language shows within a week of release.
- Made it into the Top 10 in 74 countries, hitting No. 1 in 11 (including Australia and New Zealand).
- Fans and creators expected a renewal, but it never happened.
Why Was Territory Canceled?
So what went wrong?
Netflix hasn’t provided a clear answer, but reports suggest that production timing and scheduling conflicts played a major role.
This is especially disappointing for Australian creatives, who saw Netflix as a new platform for telling high-budget, local stories without having to go to Hollywood.
Netflix’s Commitment to Australian Stories
Netflix had big plans for the Australian film industry.
At the series launch, Netflix co-CEO Greg Peters said:
“They don’t need to go to Hollywood… They can tell hugely ambitious, authentic stories at significant scale right here.”
Yet, Territory—one of Australia’s most ambitious shows—is now gone.
What Territory Was All About
Created by Ben Davies and Timothy Lee, with Greg McLean as director, the six-episode series focused on a family power struggle in the Australian Outback.
- Set on Marianne Station, the world’s largest cattle station.
- When the manager dies in a suspicious accident, a brutal battle for succession begins.
- Starred Anna Torv, Michael Dorman, Robert Taylor, and Sam Corlett.
Where to Watch Territory
If you missed out on the one and only season, you can still catch it on Netflix.
Final Thoughts: A Missed Opportunity?
Netflix took a chance on Territory, and fans responded.
But despite strong viewership, the show has been left in the dust.
Was this a mistake? Will Netflix regret pulling the plug? Let us know what you think.
