Lawrence participates in the pyrite market, selling small quantities several times to combat the rapidly rising prices, but to no avail. Lawrence's original plan falls through when Dianna's messenger informs him that the negotiations did not go as planned. In despair, Lawrence all but gives up before he is spurred on by Mark's apprentice, Lant. When Lawrence goes to sell his remaining pyrite, Holo also sells a large bag purchased from Dianna, revealing that she was attempting to help Lawrence from the beginning. The market quickly turns to selling, dropping the price of pyrite and causing Amati huge losses. He fails to fulfill his portion of his challenge to Lawrence and gives up his marriage proposal to Holo as a result. Holo and Lawrence realize what they mean to one another and the two grow closer as they decide to continue traveling together to find Yoitsu.

In front of the Merchant Guild, Amati challenges Lawrence, proclaiming he will pay for Holo's falsified debt of 1,000 silver coins and then propose to her, certain that she will leave Lawrence. Lawrence researches Amati, discovering that his plan to pay back the debt relies on the sale of pyrite. Back at the inn, Holo discovers and reads a letter for Lawrence containing an explanation of the legend about the bear that destroyed Yoitsu. When Lawrence returns, she claims that he knew Yoitsu was destroyed the entire time and he has now grown tired of her. Her fit of rage prompts Lawrence to leave the inn.

Shinpachi introduces his new girlfriend to Otae...but she turns out to be Momo-san, a character from the popular Love Choris game. There are more and more boys in Edo who can no longer distinguish game from reality like Shinpachi. Otae asks Gintoki to bring Shinpachi back to the real world. The only way is by entering the world of Love Choris and talking some sense into him. Gintoki ends up choosing a very unique heroine to be his girlfriend...

Tooru dies suddenly, and at the funeral Natsuno and Masao get in an argument that ends with Masao running home crying complaining about how no one appreciates him. Arriving at his home he sees a white figure go around back. Following him he finds nothing, as he opens the backdoor the tree above him rustles with movement.

The situation involving the twin sisters start to get dangerous as one of them starts to bleed for apparently no reason.

Watanuki meets a beautiful woman and starts to see her every day hoping to soothe her loneliness, but somehow he starts to get sick and can't figure out the reason.

Yūko decides to show Watanuki what a real Diviner can do. Watanuki learns more about Yūko's powers, while his past is explained. The important butterfly symbolism found throughout the series is also explained.

Yūko receives a Pipe Fox as payment from Ame-warashi, while another client with bad habit problems arrives at the shop.

Megumi is alone in Tokyo and coincidentally encounters Aoshi at Kamiya Dojo, who’s come back for another fight with Kenshin. Aoshi asks Megumi where Kenshin is, but she feigns ignorance. Unhappy with the lack of response, he threatens to kill her if she doesn’t tell him, when a man suddenly appears. Meanwhile, Kenshin encounters a young girl in the forests of the Hakone mountains as he makes his way to Kyoto.
