During World War II, Amsterdam criminal Dries Riphagen becomes incredibly wealthy by tracking down, extorting, and betraying Jewish people in hiding. A young resistance fighter begins hunting him down.

Now that Jan's resistance group has been betrayed, he vows revenge on Riphagen. The problem is that Riphagen fled to the east of the country after Mad Tuesday.

Now that the war is over, Riphagen secretly returns to his family in Amsterdam. He fears being arrested as a traitor.
