In an experiment that explores segregation, children from Tamworth and from Saltley in Birmingham swap places and explore issues ranging from offensive language to British identity.

Friendships develop among the children. A Tamworth boy discovers a cultural divide when he develops feelings for a Muslim girl. And the Saltley students spend their first day in Tamworth.

A clash of views over mixed-sex dancing threatens to upset the experiment when the students and parents arrange a celebration party. Also, the students learn a lesson on which ethnic group gets the best exam results.
