Hoping to reclaim the computer Haruhi extorted from the Computer Research Society earlier in the year, the Computer Research Society president challenges the SOS Brigade to a computer game they created for the cultural festival entitled The Day of Sagittarius III. Haruhi accepts his challenge, but soon finds out that playing the game is much harder than she thought. Yuki is initially mystified by the computer's operation but catches on quickly, as she will tend to do. Eventually, she manages to find out that Computer Research Society club members are cheating and is able to block and use it against them, thus winning the game and some laptops for the SOS Brigade club room.

Konata persuades Kagami and Tsukasa to come along with her to a festival of sorts: a convention called ComiKet. There, Konata tells the twins to follow her plan of buying new manga, Kagami learns how intense some manga can be, and Tsukasa gets swept into the crowds and ends up lost. Later that day, the girls go to another festival, with this one celebrating New Year. The girls discuss why Kagami is in a different class than everyone else, Konata draws a bad fortune, and the origin of Kagami's name is revealed. Konata pesters her father for money, and apparently he likes when she does that. Konata wishes her online friends a happy new year, including her teacher Kuroi. Konata starts to believe that the reason why her teacher doesn't have a boyfriend is because she's always online playing games. On Lucky Channel, it was previously announced that Akira would appear in the actual show starting with this episode, but she was unable to because she got sick.

Konata, Tsukasa, Miyuki, and Kuroi-sensei discuss baseball. Konata and Kagami talk about novels being adapted into anime, habits that people does while talking on the phone, and how people can't seem to not buy something from a vendor after making eye contact with them. Tsukasa has trouble sleeping at night. Konata asks her father about her mother, Kanata. Then, Kanata's spirit decides to pay the two a visit. On Lucky Channel,... well, there's nothing.

"Energy conservationist" Hotaro Oreki joins the Classic Lit Club at his high school at his sister's behest, to keep it from being shut down. Also joining the club are his best friend, Satoshi Fukube, and Eru Chitanda, a curious girl who enjoys mysteries.

Eru grows bored of the club's lack of activities, and suggests that they prepare an anthology to submit for the school's culture festival in the fall. While tracking down previous anthologies, the club discovers a mystery in the school's library.

Hotaro is enlisted by Eru to appear in a Dolls' Festival parade that her local shrine holds every year. When construction work unexpectedly causes a last-minute detour, it leaves the participants wondering what went awry.

Hotaro is torn between continuing with his "gray" life and the "rosy" life that the others live. A phone call from Hotaro's sister leads him to believe that there are pieces missing to his theory regarding the events of Sekitani's expulsion.

Eru's curiosity is drawn by the rash of thefts from the various clubs, and when Hotaro discovers a pattern to the crimes, Satoshi comes up with a way to publicize the Classic Lit Club through the school newspaper so they can sell their anthologies.

Eru appears on a school radio show, asking all the other students to stand with the Classic Lit Club against the phantom thief. Hotaro confronts the person he believes to be Jumoji. Satoshi comes to terms with his expectations.

In search of a conclusion to their movie, the assistant director, the prop master, and the publicist meet with the Classic Lit Club members one at a time to propose their solutions to the unfinished murder mystery.

After meeting with Irisu, Hotaro has a change of heart, and sets his mind to solving the murder mystery. Hotaro and Satoshi discuss the nature of their own potential, and what each of them might be able to accomplish.

After the busy island adventure with the SOS Brigade and a family trip to visit relatives in the countryside, Kyon is just settling in to relax for the final two weeks of summer vacation. Unfortunately for him, Haruhi wants to get everything she can out of the precious time remaining, in the company of the SOS Brigade. As such, the group is taken on a whirlwind tour of summer activities, from swimming pools to summer festivals, part-time jobs, and bug hunting. Finally, Haruhi has made it through her entire list, and the last day of August arrives. Though Kyon tries to make up for lost time by doing his neglected summer homework, he eventually gives in to distraction, going to bed just before midnight.
