Severely damaged by the Kumamoto Earthquake in April 2016, Minamiaso Railway finally resumed full operation after seven years and three months, in July 2023. Of the 17.7km line, 10.6km was destroyed, including bridges. At the time, restoration seemed hopeless due to the enormous repair costs.
