Both the American archaeologist Desmond Jordan and the greedy caliph of Timbuktu go in search of him. But the legendary place is guarded. So far everyone who has tried this has died. Desmond and Orso, on the run from robbers, find refuge in the oasis of the Jew Sholomon, whose adoptive daughter Parizade falls in love with Orso.

After much effort, Desmond Jordan has finally found the Talking Mountain. But Anthea, the lord of the mountain, forbids him to investigate further. It allows him only one glimpse into the interior of the mountain.

Jordan's son Philip has found a loyal helper in El Hallem, the former leader of the desert bandits. With the support of Anthea, they manage to free Jordan from the caliph's power. Together they compete against Ryker.
