Peter is saved from the lobotomy when Michael and Amanda break into the hospital, but ""Betsy"" captures them and locks them in the boiler room. Nurse Benson realizes that Kimberly is crazy, and tries to release the trio. ""Betsy"" stops them from escaping, but Michael is able to talk Kimberly back to reality. An orderly suspects that Michael has brainwashed Kimberly, and tries to attack him. Kimberly rescues Michael, but falls off a twenty-foot platform in the scuffle. Syd tries to dissuade Jane from continuing her murder plot. Jane offers Samantha a job and apartment in exchange for information on other offers on the store. Jane embezzles money from Richard to buy the space. Matt begins to recover from his illness. Jo is stunned when Dominick proposes. Jake tries to push Alison away when she expresses a romantic interest in him.

Peter is arrested for Bobby's murder. His alibi, Kimberly, drifts into a coma. Amanda marries Peter in a jailhouse ceremony so that she won't have to testify against him. A detective reveals to Amanda that Peter is lying about his identity. Dominick prepares to leave for a yearlong relief mission in Bosnia. He asks Jo to come with him, but she is torn. Matt struggles to catch up with his studies after he is released from the hospital. A classmate gives him amphetamines to help him stay awake, and he becomes addicted. Jake pushes Alison to give Billy another chance. She sleeps with Jake, while Billy is left alone in the rooftop restaurant he had rented for their date. Jane attempts to shoot Richard in his garage, but Syd has removed the bullets. Richard tries to rape Jane, but Sydney conks him in the head with a shovel. Kimberly persuades Michael to grant her dying wish by sleeping with her one last time. Amanda uses Craig's infatuation with her to trick him into giving her half of D&D. Craig learns that his father cut him out of the will. Peter is appointed chief-of-staff. Taylor offers to cook him a celebratory dinner, but he stands her up to go to a dinner party with Amanda. A drunken and depressed Craig shows up on Amanda's doorstep, and she lets him sleep on the couch. The next morning, Craig leads Peter to believe that he slept with Amanda. Alison is befriended by a guy from the mail room, who quickly asks her out and reveals that his father is the vice president of a sunscreen company with which D&D is doing business. After failing miserably in his new job at a coffee shop, Jake agrees to help his ex-girlfriend Peri with the sale of a fraudulent painting. Matt questions Rhonda's character after she reneges on a promise to help with a dinner at the halfway house.

During his surprise birthday party, Jake receives an unexpected visit from his mother. Billy is the victim of a car-jacking after dropping off a passenger in South Central, and begins to display signs of racial prejudice, making Rhonda is furious. Jane and Michael quarrel after he behaves insensitively during a parenting class.

After a chance meeting in the street, Alison becomes romantically involved with environmentalist Keith Gray. Billy is saddled with bad credit because he has yet to pay off a college loan that he didn't even need. Jane is determined to work off the weight from her pregnancy.

Keith stays with Alison while his estranged wife, Lily, is in town for the weekend. Rhonda's new roommate turns out to be completely anal-retentive.

Billy gets a job as a cab driver and makes a connection with a passenger, who he begins dating. Alison is put off by the speed of the couple's courtship, and grows tired of their constant presence in the apartment. Jake is arrested following a scuffle at the unemployment office, and is less than grateful when Kelly bails him out. Jane worries about the status of her marriage when Michael is unable to recall the specific moment he fell in love with her.

Jane learns that she is pregnant, but doesn't tell Michael because he hadn't seemed thrilled by the prospect of having kids. Billy is given a column in the neighborhood newspaper.

Amanda and Craig take a business trip to Palm Springs. When Peter arrives to surprise Amanda, he finds her having dinner with Craig and wearing a pearl necklace. Peter refuses to listen to her explanation, and trashes the restaurant. Amanda throws him out of the apartment. Taylor decides to donate one of Samantha's paintings to a charity auction. Sam (who hasn't received any money from the sales) tries to buy it back, but Sydney bids on the painting to drive up the price and make Kyle look generous. While Sandy is shopping with Rhonda, she meets a new guy who asks her out. However, she soon realizes that there is no spark between them and tries to let him down gently. Meanwhile, Alison looks to replace her clunker car but has a hard time letting go because of all the memories it holds.

When Jo hits financial hard times, Jake offers to help her. Meanwhile, Jane loses her job and Matt continues his legal threads.
